Cyrus & Elsie Pre-Wedding

Pre-weddings in Autumn are one of my favourite times of the year. In Perth you get the most temperate weather, cool mornings and warm afternoons. Especially if you come later in the season (May/June) you get lush green countryside and golden leaves. Come at the right time and we can also take you for our signature star photos!

Gus and Gek travelled to Perth from Singapore especially to shoot their pre-wedding in the Lancelin Sand Dunes. They’re about 1 hour 45 mins drive north of Perth and we’ve been travelling to shoot our couples in Lancelin since 2013. It’s a friendly coastal town and the locals are warm and welcoming so if you haven’t been, I suggest you check it out!

Lancelin has a reputation as a great place for sand boarding and 4WD fun. Many thousands of tourists world-wide travel there to hire a board and surf down the fine white sand or get into one of the dune buggys. As far as Lancelin pre-wedding shoots go, it started when a couple sent me a photo of a white sandy desert and asked:
“Can we shoot in the Australian desert?”
I don’t think they quite realised what the Australian desert really looks like. We do have dunes, but the sand is a deep red and the temperatures are scorching. Not to mention we have killer snakes and prickly spinifex grass. The photo they sent me was actually taken at the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, USA. So the best alternative I could offer was a visit to Lancelin and it started a love affair with that place that has allowed me to win multiple Fearless Awards and Grand Prize runner up in the 2018 International Wedding Photographer Of The Year Awards.
Gek is a professional model and normally we’re specialists at making everyday people look amazing. In this case it felt like cheating as I was learning things from her by observing the way she contorts her body and plays it up for the camera. In our pine forest shoot she was adorned in a gown by Berta Bridal worth $15,000 and I was sending her back and forth through the scrub! She challenged me to see if I could give her dunes, forests and Stars all in one day. Mission accomplished!
Here are some favourites from their day.

Barrett Lane Function centre is one of my favourite venues for weddings in Swan Valley. It’s tucked away down Lennard St in Herne Hill so you wouldn’t automatically know it was in Swan Valley unless you were specifically looking for it.
We’ve photographed weddings there numerous times through different seasons and it is one of the few venues that provides an intimate backyard setting. Probably because it is literally in the host’s backyard. Barrett Lane is situated in the North-east part of Swan Valley which gives us a lot of photo location opportunities throughout the year. We can easily duck out (ten minutes drive) with your bridal party to some spectacular spots if a change in scenery is required…

We can easily duck out (ten minutes drive) with your bridal party to some spectacular spots if a change in scenery is required. Daniel from Showcase Catering is the exclusive caterer for the venue and they always provide the bridal party with an assortment of takeaway canapes. That way your bridal party has plenty to munch on whilst we’re shooting away. We’ve photographed at nearly all the venues in WA and I’d have to say the food Danny put’s out is up there with the very best in Perth. Your guests will not be disappointed.
One thing you’d probably never think of when choosing a venue is the orientation of the property. Barrett Lane’s ceremony space and function building faces west. As we know the sun sets in the west and most receptions start their pre-dinner drinks and canapes just before sunset. That means your guests and family members get an unobstructed view of the sunset overlooking the vines. Photographically speaking, you could not ask for anything better!
Here are a few image sets from past weddings at Barrett Lane. I’ve selected a few images from each wedding to give you a feel of how we capture the day as well as how the venue can look once it is set out for your guests. Most importantly, we want to show you how it feels after the sun has set, the lights dim and you’re sharing the best night of your life with the people you love.
Tom and Anne were married at Guildford Grammar School Chapel with their reception at Barrett Lane. Anne had one of the most amazing floral arrangements I’ve ever seen hung on the ceiling beams inside the function room. It really gives you an idea of how you can really dress up the room. The beauty of Barrett Lane is that having a rustic venue you have the freedom to add personal touches and whether simple or elaborate, the result is guaranteed to be beautiful and personal.

Chris is a talented landscape photographer and he married Sam at Barrett Lane with a simpler evening ceremony for about 50 of their closest family and friends.
Here is an early winter wedding at Barrett Lane in June (before the vines shed their leaves). Most Perth couples are worried about planning winter weddings so they often avoid bookings in June through August. However what most people don’t realise is that Winter doesn’t usually hit hard until July so we often get sunny warm days in June that make weddings very comfortable. In fact most of the rainy weddings I’ve photographed tend to occur in September and October, right in the early spring months when Winter sticks around a little too long.
Amanda and Hoang’s outfits were also a little different to the norm where they swapped traditional outfit colours, something you rarely see at weddings!
Quinn and Connie chose Barrett Lane on our recommendation to finish off a whirlwind series of wedding events. They spent two days with us in Perth for one of our most elaborate pre-wedding shoots, followed by a wedding ceremony and banquet in Hong Kong with over 300 guests. Many of their Perth friends couldn’t make their wedding so they decided to hold a party for about 60 friends at Barrett Lane, complete with freshly shucked oysters and a three course meal. Here is a little snippet of their day followed by a few frames from their pre-wedding shoot!
Finally we’ll end it off with some snippets from their pre-wedding shoot!
This MASSIVE announcement just dropped. I entered the International Wedding Photographer of the Year awards (IWPOTY) and this image won the Pre-wedding / Engagement category AND the OVERALL 2018 Competition Runner Up Prize!
This is an incredible way to finish off 2018 and my biggest accomplishment yet! We have a wonderful team that works so hard to make this all happen. Thanks to all our past couples for trusting us and allowing us to create beautiful artwork each day. We are always grateful and excited that we get the privilege to shoot for you. I always believed that we could produce the best photography in the world and this achievement proves we’re up there with the best of them.

For many years I avoided Margret River Region because I knew it was at least three hours drive south of Perth. Holidaying in the region many times in the past I also knew that getting from one place to the next would require long drives too so trying to fit in all that driving in a single day wouldn’t result in many photos (nor much variety)…

We decided to offer multi-day pre-wedding shoots in 2017. This way we could divide the long drive over two days giving us the freedom to travel without as many time constraints. Wan Qing and Huai Ce were the first couple to take us up on this offer and we were able to really explore what the region had to offer. I always thought “there’s nothing in Margaret River that we can’t duplicate closer to Perth”. Now after visiting multiple times, I must admit I was very wrong.
Sometimes photos cannot do justice to the scenery. You have to experience Margaret River for yourself.
At this point I must shout-out to Alex and Bec from Fairlawn Estate for hosting us and allowing us to photograph at their homestead. It’s one of the newest wedding venues in the southwest, only a few minutes drive from Busselton. It is both beautiful and rich in history. If you want to have a romantic retreat away with your partner, family or friends you can book rooms to relax or make it a base to explore the rest of the food and wine region.
