Tom & Samantha Wedding
This is another wedding I’ve waited a long time to shoot. Tom & Sam were married on the family orchard in Karragullen under the old avocado trees. We pulled all stops for their wedding including some drone images to capture the family property and rolling hills. Everything came together on the day including the serendipity of picking a night with a new moon and clear sky which gave way for some amazing portraits in the night sky. Here is a small collection of my favourite images.

HuaiCe & WanQing – Margaret River Pre-Wedding
For many years I avoided Margret River Region because I knew it was at least three hours drive south of Perth. Holidaying in the region many times in the past I also knew that getting from one place to the next would require long drives too so trying to fit in all that driving in a single day wouldn’t result in many photos (nor much variety)…

Holidaying in the region many times in the past I also knew that getting from one place to the next would require long drives too so trying to fit in all that driving in a single day wouldn’t result in many photos (nor much variety).
We decided to offer multi-day pre-wedding shoots in 2017. This way we could divide the long drive over two days giving us the freedom to travel without as many time constraints. Wan Qing and Huai Ce were the first couple to take us up on this offer and we were able to really explore what the region had to offer. I always thought “there’s nothing in Margaret River that we can’t duplicate closer to Perth”. Now after visiting multiple times, I must admit I was very wrong.
Sometimes photos cannot do justice to the scenery. You have to experience Margaret River for yourself.
At this point I must shout-out to Alex and Bec from Fairlawn Estate for hosting us and allowing us to photograph at their homestead. It’s one of the newest wedding venues in the southwest, only a few minutes drive from Busselton. It is both beautiful and rich in history. If you want to have a romantic retreat away with your partner, family or friends you can book rooms to relax or make it a base to explore the rest of the food and wine region.

Daniel & Hannah – Swan Valley Pre-wedding
Daniel & Hannah’s pre-wedding is one of my favourite shoots because from it came one of my personal favourite images. It’s a perfect example of how we take two folks in love and showcase that throughout the locations we visit. Another reason I’m sharing their pre-wedding is that there’s an aspect of photography that’s often overlooked but always present…

I call it a Godsend but you can call it luck, fortune, blessing, serendipity or whatever you like. There are two parts to making good photos, first it’s making the most of the things you can control. So that is everything from having the right gear (and knowing how to use it to its limits), also posing the couple, framing the shot and making beautiful frames over and over. This part is the skill of photography, knowing what to do, when and how to do it to get the best result.
Then there are all the things you can’t control. The weather, the sunsets, the people/animals/lighting you don’t expect to get. So those are the Godsend elements that I believe God commonly places in all our laps and our job is to take our skills and marry it with the things we’re given to produce something incredible.
My favourite image is the reflection silhouette. The thing out of my control is the amazing red and purple sunset that came when I happened to be out and able to place them in the right spot. These are the lovely surprises I’m always looking for that give us variety we can never plan for!

Paul & Jess – Joondalup Resort Wedding
These two were married at Joondalup Resort on a HUMID February day. Whilst it was uncomfortable with sweat dripping down our faces, we still had the best time.
The people are everything… I remember my first meeting with Paul and Jess. Pretty much the entire meeting we were cracking jokes and having a laugh so as soon as that meeting ended I knew it was a precursor to an epic wedding day. Adrian and I shooting this wedding… it was meant to be!

Here are my favourite images from their wedding. I’ve even included one of me at work shot by Adrian. I never generally include these images but in this case it was actually a very good memory of having us shoot their big day!

Nick & Chris Scarborough Wedding
Nick & Chris’ wedding was probably one of the most challenging I’ve had to shoot. When we first met, Nick told me that they have common love of fitness and spend a LOT of time at the beach so it was only fitting that they tie the knot at Iluka beach. So the plan was a summer wedding in January out on the sand overlooking the Indian Ocean… and since it can get seriously hot they provided thongs and fans for all the guests…

So the plan was a summer wedding in January out on the sand overlooking the Indian Ocean… and since it can get seriously hot they provided thongs and fans for all the guests.
I wasn’t really paying attention to the weather forecast because in the last four years all my summer weddings have been pretty sweltering so it’s always a matter of making sure I have enough fluids and sunscreen so I can avoid heat exhaustion. In one of the last emails from Chris a couple days before the wedding she signs off with:
“We are really excited for Saturday!! (rain, hail or shine!!)”
Now why would anyone write that in the middle of Summer?! so I went to check the weather for Saturday and it was the complete opposite to what I expected….
Thunderstorms with a 100% chance of rain.
So without a backup plan in sight I met Chris in her hotel room at the Rendezvous Hotel Scarborough and she told me she was fine….
“I’ll just dance in the rain.”
When we arrived at the ceremony it is raining even harder than the morning but everyone was 100% comitted. I have never really tested any of my gear in the rain but apparently it’s weather sealed so there’s really only one way to find out if those claims are true so I just went for it. One of the guests even said “It’s great to see you out there, no hesitation” to which I responded “well if not me then who?” and it was definitely nice to not have any guests competing for photos.
It’s actually pretty cool to be thrown curveballs like this every now and then because we get to show a wedding that’s a little different. It also proves my point when I tell couples that what matters are the people who share the day with you and the moments that fly by. Whatever happens with the weather… it is what it is and my job is to make sure you can relive the day, rain hail or shine. It will be one of the best days of your life and I’ll show it to you!
There was a silver lining though. During the reception the skies cleared up enough to produce an amazing sunset so we still managed to duck out after speeches to make some creative portraits on the beach. To top it off, one of their photos was featured in the Sunday Times on Valentines day. What a win.
Here are my favourite images of the day… enjoy!
